Winding Down

what song shall I sing
as draws near the end of days
approaches darkness

calmly I shall wait
breathing in and breathing out
marking not the time

in desolation
brain void of image and thought
life of solitude

some things I shall do
text and talk with my two friends
share a meal, share time

haiku I shall write
read books, listen to music
keep up with baseball

some things need doing
always there is this and that
doing just doing

ashes contracted...
once gathered from the fire
to be strewn or kept

human way no more
in which way then shall I be
this I do not know

a few will be sad
yet their sorrow will not last
for they too will pass

the life that I lived
like all before and after
quite soon forgotten

assign it no worth
bother not with its value
it was...let it be

were I now to die
what would there be to regret
oh! that too is dead
