The Eleven Sayings

Bridging 1994 and 1995 there was an eleven month period that transformed my way of living and set me on a course that I still walk today. During that time of solitude, reflection, and meditation I received what I have come to call The Eleven Sayings. These sayings were not words I read or heard. One by one and at random, these sentences simply arrived in my brain. One moment they were not there; the next they were. At the time, some of them were less meaningful than others. Over the past twenty-six years, the meaning of each saying has evolved. However, not one word has changed. Throughout the years, these eleven sayings have remained guideposts for a way of living.

Each of the sayings contains one or more of the pronouns I, me, or you. As my understanding of the sayings evolved, the biggest changes involved what these pronouns came to mean to me. You see, in 1994-1995 I was a devout Catholic. At that time, I referred to God. You referred to me. For example, in the first saying – I will give you the answer at the right timeI meant God, you meant me, and the answer was going to be concrete and understandable. I was in a place where certitude was paramount.

I am no longer in that place. In fact, place is no longer important, nor is certitude. What is important today is that the being moment of 1994-1995 continues to be the same being moment of 2020-2021 and the same being moment hereafter. What is important is that The Eleven Sayings continue to be The Eleven Sayings that mean to me what they mean to me today, whatever that meaning is and whatever that today is.

These are my sayings. I think everyone has their own sayings, whether they have arrived, are yet to arrive, or never arrive or whether they are eleven or nine or two or a hundred.
