Cats

Dogs are good at the three L’s: loving, loyalty, liveliness.  Easy to see why folks adopt them and love them in return.  Cats, on the other hand, tend to be independent, travel their own road, and hear that different drummer.  For the most part, they are tolerant of their persons.  For exactly those reasons, I love cats.  Zano is the name of the one who adopted me and who allows me to be of service to him.

I receive so much in return.  Zano’s personality and behaviors generate a lot of haiku, for one thing.  He is also my teacher.  Especially when he was younger, he would get into quite a bit of mischief.  Yet, I never once became angry with him.  I wondered why and came to realize it was because I accepted him just as he is.  He is a cat, and he was simply being in a cat way.  I also wondered why I could not accept people in that same way.  They are human.  They are simply being in a human way.  Once Zano taught me that, my life got a whole lot better.  I started to learn and am learning still to place fewer expectations on people.  I accept myself being in a human way.  Why not them?

Besides cats in general and Zano in particular, two other cats appear in these haiku.  They are my daughter Nikki’s cat, Scarlet, and my grandson Nikolaus’ cat, Artemis. I hope you enjoy reading about them and enjoy the cat centered verses you will find in their Archive.

Post script: Zano died on June 13, 2023, in a veterinarian emergency room. His little kidneys failed him.  I miss him, yet know he is being in a new way.  He remains with me, ever my companion.

ever will he be
in a way beyond knowing
companion always
